This breed developed from several mastiff-type breeds: the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer. These creatures were praised for their strength, protective instinct and courage; they were used in bull baiting, fighting, cattle herding and guarding, hunting big game and pulling carts. Due to its intelligence, the breed was very popular in circuses and theaters. The breed is of German origin, but it has an English name. Breeding of these animals was indiscriminate up to the 20th century when the studbook and breed standard appeared.
