The breed originated in Germany in the 19th century. It was bred for stability and strength. The first breed club was formed in 1896 to pursue the looks and qualities clearly desired in the breed. The AKC recognized this breed in 1904. The breed we know today is only slightly different from the original. These canines are described as medium-sized and short-hair. This breed is playful and high-spirited, yet even-tempered making it an excellent family companion and playmate for children. This breed is protective of its family and home, which makes it a good guardian. These canines are often used in military and police work.

These are muscular, short-coated, square-headed canines, characterized by the slightly pushed in top of the muzzle, and a broad nose. Males stand 22.5-25 inches at the withers and weigh about 70 pounds. Females are slightly smaller, measuring 21-23.5 inches and weighing about 60 pounds. These dogs have a short coat that needs a regular wipe-down and an occasional bath. The only acceptable body color in this breed is fawn.
